The accolade was one of ten coveted awards presented by Jeremy Wayne, Tatler's Restaurant Editor and Michel Janneau, Executive Vice President of Champagne Louis Roederer. Following a formal training in the hotel and catering industry, British born Simon Girling was a UK Young Waiter of the Year finalist in 1992 and a Caterer and Hotelkeeper magazine Acorn Award winner in 1998. On receiving his TATLER award Simon said "I am honoured and delighted to have received this award. While there are many opportunities for the Chef to shine in the culinary arena, there are very few associations that recognize the importance of the front of house manager in a restaurant which makes this acknowledgement even more rewarding." The Ritz is a London legend, deservedly attracting the great and the good since its opening in 1906. In late 2006, following the celebrations of the hotel’s Centenary year, The Ritz opened William Kent House, an eighteenth century town house situated at No 22 Arlington Street now adjoining the hotel. In addition to the five banquet rooms now available for private functions, three sumptuous new residential suites have also been created on the upper floors of the house. Work on the interiors of these suites – The Royal, The Prince of Wales and The Arlington – was carried out by The Ritz in-house team in keeping with the guidelines set down by British Heritage. The Royal Suite, a one bedroom split level duplex, is accessed from the first floor of the house and incorporates a magnificent drawing room with a vaulted gilded ceiling, leading to a separate formal dining room with seating for 10 people at the mahogany table. Perhaps the most unique feature of this suite is the hidden staircase leading to the oval bedroom. The Prince of Wales Suite is a spacious apartment style penthouse enjoying outstanding views from the main reception rooms over Green Park towards Buckingham Palace. The suite comprises its own entrance hall and butler’s kitchen, two inter-connecting bedrooms decorated in delicate pastel upholstery, each with walk in wardrobes and marble bathrooms, with a television that can be controlled whilst in the bath. The Ritz Butler is on call 24 hours a day to guests staying in the residential suites at William Kent House and guests can expect the same excellence in service for The Ritz is renowned, assured that their privacy and security is protected at all times. and the traditional features and decorative features in the rooms have been combined to include the most contemporary of technological facilities such as Broadband hi speed internet access, USA and UK modems and facsimile points, CD and DVD players flat screen TVs and cordless phones.
