Welcome to the December enewsletter.
As our Centenary draws to a close, we would like to share with you some of the highlights of the exciting events we have enjoyed at The Ritz over the past few months. Our Centenary programme started in January with the launch of our two night Centenary Celebration Package which, to date, has been booked by some 100 guests from far and wide. The magnificent 2006 Phantom Rolls Royce motor car, the hotel's birthday present to itself also arrived in January and has now become a popular sight around the streets of Mayfair and St James's. In February we were honoured by a visit from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to unveil a commemorative plaque in honour of the hotel's 100th anniversary. On 24th May, 100 years to the day since The Ritz' opened its doors. We were delighted to welcome over 200 guests and friends who joined us in celebration of the first 100 years of The Ritz. And now, towards the close of this significant year in the history of The Ritz, we are delighted to present five spectacular new banquet rooms and three magnificent accommodation suites at William Kent House, the eighteenth century mansion house adjoining the hotel which will open officially in the New Year. As we raise our glasses to welcome in the New Year at the annual New Year's Gala Dinner and Dance in The Ritz Restaurant, I hope you will join with me in a toast to the next 100 years of The Ritz! In November 2006, The Ritz opened William Kent House, the Grade II star listed building, now adjoining the hotel, situated at No. 22 Arlington Street. Designed in the 1740's by the renowned 18th century architect William Kent, from whom the house now takes its name the historic mansion was known as Wimborne House when The Ritz opened a century ago in 1906. Acquired by the owners of The Ritz in 2005, almost a hundred years after Cesar Ritz was rebuffed by Lord Wimborne during the construction of The Ritz, the majesty of the William Kent House interiors are now resplendently reborn. William Kent House at The Ritz now provides a varied selection of venue space for elegant dining, bespoke meetings, weddings and gala occasions, offering the perfect setting for all types of social and corporate events. We are delighted to be one of an exclusive number of hotels participating in the celebrations for the 160th birthday of Escoffier and particularly proud to be the only hotel in London to do so. We will mark this occasion with a special dinner: "King of Chefs, Chef of Kings" on the 24th January 2007 Caesar Ritz and Escoffier's mutual understanding and teamwork throughout their working lives together was to bring about the most significant changes and modern development in the hotel industry. Along with Escanard, Escoffier and Ritz were called to the Savoy Hotel in London as Head of Restaurant Services, Chef and General Manager respectively. Their success was beyond expectation. In honour of the centenary year of The Ritz London, the hotel commissioned one of the oldest flower growing nurseries in the Netherlands to produce a new rose for the legendary one hundred year old hotel. Mariella Preesman of the Preesman nurseries in Amsterdam says "It has been both an honour and a challenge for us to create a flower that fulfils all the high quality demands and expectations of a rose that carries the renowned Ritz name." After a long period of breeding and selecting by grower Martin van Ginkel, a veteran rose grower of some 20 years, this new exclusive variety of rose was developed in one of the environmentally friendly Preesman greenhouses. The Ritz Rose has a beautiful creamy ivory colour with delicate green edges to the petals. It has a natural fragrance and is only available as a long stemmed rose, grown exclusively to one metre in length. At the recent launch of The Ritz Rose the hotel's General Manager Stephen Boxall commented "We are delighted and proud to present the new Ritz Rose. The classic elegance of this beautiful flower reflects the classic elegance of our hotel and is a welcome addition to our portfolio of Ritz branded products. It is the perfect symbolization of the hotel's Centenary year and we look forward to the enjoyment and pleasure The Ritz Rose will bring to our guests and visitors over the next 100 years."
